Ukraine was one of the first states to become part of the former Soviet Union (1922). It became an Independent state in 1991. The Communist party has been banned but the multi-party democratic system has failed to achieve great economic reform.

Millions of Christians were killed under Communism but the church is stronger than before.

Population is 88% Christian, 0.80% Jewish.

8 languages spoken. Whole Bible available in 3 languages, NT available in 1 language, parts being translated in 3 languages. 2 languages have no Bible. Russian is spoken widely. 99% literacy.

Radiation Pollution from Chernobyl affects much of the country. Poverty has resulted for many. In addition, violent crime, breakdown of families, and sexual immorality are all on the rise. The AIDS virus spreads rapidly in Ukraine.

Ukraine was the Bible belt of the Soviet sphere, with half of the former USSR's Baptists and Pentecostals. Since 1991 evangelical churches have nearly doubled, in spite of difficult conditions.

Others things to pray for: Internal healing for those scarred by Communist persecutions of the past, full freedom of religion for all groups, unity among churches, an influx of resources for training believers and leaders.

Many Ukranian Jews have emigrated to Israel and the West with the Jewish population declining 10% annually. There are dozens of Messianic synagogues and a Messianic Bible School.
