The Philippines (Capital Manila) is a large expanse of 7250 islands in the Pacific Ocean. It was a Spanish colony from 1565 to 1898. There is a Catholic majority and many Spanish customs. It was ruled by the USA until their independence in 1946. They have had democratic rule since the end of Marcos' 21 year dictatorship in 1986. There most recent President Estrada's time in office ended in 2001 due to public indignation. They are now in the process of new elections.
Over _ of the 77 million inhabitants are under the age of 15. The growing evangelical church is seeking to minister to these and other problems in the Philippines which include widespread corruption, guerilla warfare, natural disasters (many typhoons), widespread poverty and unemployment. 300,000 Filipino intercessors have committed to praying one hour each day for their nation. The strongest evangelical groups are Full gospel groups and indigenous Pentecostal denominations. The missionary spirit of the Filipinos is growing. There are @2900 missionaries from the Philippines and @2800 to the Philippines.
Of concern in the south is the desire of the minority Muslims in Mindanao to establish an independent Islamic state in the south. Muslims make up 5% of the population.
Of priority for this nation is the training and discipling of Christian leaders. The Christians there face complacency, nominalism, poverty, animism and witchcraft (among Catholics). Of special concern is the 60,000 children and 500,000 women involved in sex trade.
The average income is $1200 annual. Of the 169 languages the whole Bible is available in only 8 languages. NT available in 52 languages, translation work is being done in 81 languages. 28 languages spoken have no Bible.
