The Julie Project

Julie is a beautiful little girl from Democratic Republic of Congo. At the young age of 4 she was brutally raped and shot when intruders raided her village. One of Answering The Call's mission teams met Julie in late 2005 at the Panzi General Hospital where she was awaiting surgery for the damages sustained during the attack. Answering The Call brought Julie to the United States in 2006 where several doctors treated her and performed the urethroplasty and bladder neck reconstruction surgery that was necessary for her recovery.

Julie's story represents one of thousands. The medical director of Panzi General Hospital reports in a CBS News article that the number of rape victims is increasing at a rapid rate. He also says that the number of reported rapes "is only a fraction of the women who are raped in outlying villages." (cbs.news.com) According to the CNN Worldnews this type of violent crime "is being described as the new weapon of war..." "Rape victims are often ostracized in Africa, where husbands and families routinely kick out their wives and mothers if they have been raped." (cbs.news.com) Answering The Call is currently building a women's shelter near Panzi General Hospital where women and children who have suffered injuries like Julie's can live. Micro-industry initiatives aimed at making these victims self sufficient are being launched in their behalf.
